I'm dedicating April to Germany and naturally had hoped to find a mystery guest from Germany, but no luck. Everyone I found who looked like a possibility turned out to be Austrian. So I'm giving you Helen Traubel, an American soprano of German descent, who made her career singing Wagner. She comes on at 17:40.
Arlene makes some veiled comments, which I will explain. Traubel had been a major Metropolitan Opera singer in the 1940s but in 1953 (not long before her *What's My Line?* appearance) general manager Rudolf Bing decided not to renew her contract. He didn't like that she was appearing in movies and night clubs, he thought that was undignified for a Met star. Fuddy duddy.
