I first heard "Misirlou" in Pulp Fiction, in the astounding Dick Dale and the Del Tones recording. Here's the recording used in the movie:
Here are Dick and the Del Tones doing the song in a movie called A Swingin' Affair. Please alert me if you see this movie on the TCM schedule. Or streaming on Tubi. Or anywhere.
Here's a sung version by Dario Moreno. Allegedly in French.
Don't you love Wikipedia? Here's the first known recording of the song, by Theodotos ("Tetos") Demetriades, in 1927:
Here's a lush, gauzy recording by personal dreamboat Harry James, 1941:
I'll close with a live recording by a jazz quintet. You know the expression "garage band"? These guys sound like a garage jazz combo. Not in a bad way, not at all. The drums and the bass lay down a funky beat and the flugelhorn and clarinet do their sinewy klezmer business on top of it. On a side note, Audrius Zalcas on flugelhorn is a cutie.
That Harry James version is what I call swank!!!!
