I recently discovered Playboy After Dark on YouTube. I know that two "best of" compilations have been released on DVD but I want a complete box set, all 52 episodes, please! What I've seen is a fantastic document of what was hip and/or hot at the time, always live performances, done in a relaxed and super smoky setting.
Thankfully YouTube has four clips of Lambert Hendricks and Ross on the show. Here's the trio doing a cute number called "Doodlin'."
Ross (quel surprise) took a solo turn with her great song "Twisted." And whoa, Count Basie at the piano...? Talk about luxury casting.
They pull in Joe Williams for this song - - it's interesting how they set up the number so he's with them but also apart from them. Like the trio is singing backup and he's the lead. One more thing: could someone please confirm that it's Peter Lawford at the end of this video, in the background on the right? I first spot him at about 5:10.
Their finale is with Williams, more integrated this time. WHAT A VOICE. Clearly I need to do a deep dive into Joe Williams. I love love love the scat conversation at the end of this number.
I'm sure you spotted Tony Bennett in the group - - I'm sure he sang his own number(s) but do you think he felt left out?
