Tuesday night I had the craziest dream! I don't often remember my dreams but this one was in the early hours when I was sort of half awake. I got up and quickly wrote an email to my friend David Jay about it, before I forgot.
I was at this huge old house in the country with my mom and my brothers and all of these people who were in our "group," or people we had recently gotten to know and wanted to include. Let me say right off that all of these people who I mention were in their 30s or 40s in the dream.
My official girlfriend was Karen Allen - - lovely, calm, earnest, wonderful girl. I'd also brought a more sexy, volatile woman I was interested in, I think that might have been Charlotte Rampling. And best of all, a woman I had recently met and thought was totally amazing, Carol Kane!
She had the funniest moment in the dream. The big group of us (maybe 15-20 people) were all in a room, sitting in a circle, having individual conversations. Carol Kane caught my eye from across the room - - she had found a CD on the bookshelf behind her and was suggesting she put it on. I was miming to her, "Yes, good idea, but play it quietly." She was responding, also in mime and sign language, that she couldn't understand what I was saying." So I said, loudly, "Yes, put it on, but keep the volume low." That, of course, put a screeching halt to all conversations. She put the CD on and the first song started playing. She started singing along in a highly performative manner, a counterpart to the vocal line that was on the recording. It was very impressive, everyone applauded like mad when she finished.
My brother Howard brought a woman he was interested in - - she was Jewish Orthodox or Russian Orthodox or Greek Orthodox. I'm not sure if I knew, I'm not sure if SHE knew. But she was gorgeous and exotic and I kept asking her where she got her scarf.
Eventually my brothers and I decided dinner was taking too long (my mother was milling about and being hostess all this time, being charming) and we were hungry so we got in the car with some other guys who were there and we drove to a bagel shop that Woody Allen raved about. We parked the car and Woody and I led the pack walking down the long sidewalk to the bagel shop. I said to him, "Ya know, if this place didn't exist you would have to invent it" and he laughed and laughed like it was the funniest thing he'd ever heard.
We all got bagels and laid out on the grass in little sets and ate them. I ended up with the guy who was my secret, true love, Jack Kennedy. He was incredibly charismatic and tender but emotionally distant. We were laying on the grass with our bagels, having a little cuddle, and he said to me, "I love you so much." I couldn't believe my ears, so I said, "What did you say?" He said, "I love you so much."
Cut to a few days later. I was at work with my brothers or a couple of guy friends, whatever. We all worked as bartenders at an old neighborhood bar. It was very busy but just like in the movies, the three of us never had any actual work to do, we could spend the whole day talking with each other.
Who walked in but Carol Kane.
ME: Well hi! What a treat to see you.
CAROL KANE: I wanted to come in and thank you again for the fun weekend. What an amazing group of people.
ME: I'm so glad you could come, everybody was crazy about you.
CAROL KANE: I can tell that you were conflicted about who you should be with. There were a few people there, me included, who you were drawn to, and you couldn't quite make up your mind who would be best for you.
ME: Very perceptive.
CAROL KANE: Go with the Kennedy. You can never go wrong with a Kennedy.

As I said I wrote about this to my friend David Jay when I woke up. My email started with the phrase, "I had the craziest dream last night!" Which of course made me think of the divine Helen Forrest and the equally divine Harry James. What is the pseudo squaw dress she has on. And the biggest surprise at the very end - - I've heard of a big band with strings, but a French horn...? That's a first.
