The Best Supporting Actress winner for 2017 was Alison Janney for I, Tonya. That's a definite diva of a performance, with her coarse demeanor and that damn bird on her shoulder the whole time. But my favorite performance of that year was Lesley Manville as the so-frosty-she-done-froze-my-fangers sister of the designer in Phantom Thread. Such a thrilling performance, so powerful and understated. The mensch among the other nominees is Laurie Metcalf as the mom in Lady Bird. A sweet, funny, honest, heartwarming performance. The scene I chose has one of the most hilarious and shocking moments in a movie in recent years.
