I'm a day late with this, my apologies!
We're at 2016 and the two Best Picture winners that year are a perfect diva/mensch duo - - Moonlight is the mensch, a searing, challenging, tender movie. Not outwardly ambitious but so powerful and profoundly beautiful. And the diva is La La Land, a flash and no pan. Bright colors, peppy songs, spiffy choreography, but all at the service of what. And please do NOT compare that movie to The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, there is no comparison. One is a cinema classic I can see once a year for the rest of my life, the other I saw once and that was maybe too much.
Do I see your brow has been knit? TWO Best Picture winners? Yes, this was the year that Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway announced the Best Picture winner. Beatty was given an envelope for Best Actress and was confused. He gave the card to Dunaway who thought he was doing a bit, saw the movie title, and said "La La Land!" This was not just the greatest fiasco in Oscar history, it was a low point in Western civilization. And the blame rests squarely on Beatty's shoulders. Yes, the Academy should never have given him the envelope for Best Actress when he was announcing Best Picture - - but really, he was the last stop in this journey, he said he saw it was the wrong card, and it was up to HIM to say, "Um stop the presses, I was given the wrong damn card. Does someone have an envelope for Best Picture, please?" I'm just sayin'.
