This week we're looking at 2014 and I'm going off brand a bit. Up to this point I've looked at pairs from the Oscar nominations for the year in question. This week I'm looking at two contrasting performances by Julianne Moore, one which won Best Actress at the Oscars and one which won Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival.
The Oscar was the mensch - - a delicate, brave, heartbreaking performance as a woman struggling with Alzheimer's in Still Alice. It had Oscar Win written all over it, which doesn't necessarily make it less impressive.
The Cannes was the diva - - and wow, it could not be more different. I'll quote the Wikipedia page: Moore plays a "famous but aging and fading actress living in the shadow of her legendary movie-star mother and feeling abused by her." The movie examines Hollywood celebrity worship and features a shocking self-immolation, not something you see every day. Moore is audacious, fearless, thrilling.
