Paul Plishka died the other day at the age of 83. He was a bass who sang 88 roles at the Met in over 1,500 performances. I don't think I ever saw him at the Met (his career was on the wane by the time I moved to New York around the turn of the century) but I saw him in recital and giving a master class in Madison. He had a gorgeous voice and seemed like a fun guy. Here he is brimming with gravitas in Verdi's Don Carlo.
And Tony Roberts died the other day at the age of 85. He had a long and varied career on stage and screen but will always be remembered for playing Woody Allen's smooth, charming best friend in a number of movies. Here they are doing their thing in Annie Hall.
