I was sad to read in The Times that Mitzi Gaynor had died. She had a right to, at the age of 93, but it would have been nice if she had checked with me first.
She was a movie star (her best known movie is one I don’t like, South Pacific) who left movies when her kinds of roles were starting to dry up. She had huge success in Vegas, in nightclubs, and on TV, doing a variety special once a year for 10 consecutive years. As Rex Reed put it in a documentary about her TV career, “Every year for ten years the world DEMANDED a Mitzi Gaynor special!”
Here’s my favorite number from those specials, something I’ve watched on YouTube about 100 times. No exagg.
