My friend Patrick (not to be confused with my brother Patrick, who is also quite friendly) alerted me to the death of Louise Fletcher, who died a few days ago at the age of 88. Of course she's earned her place in movie history in her bone-chilling performance as Nurse Ratched in *One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.* One of the great screen villains of all time, she was horrifying and yet so understated.
I want to share her Oscar speech which always brings me to tears. And such a lovely gown. What a bizarre lineup that year:
Isabelle Adjani in *The Story of Adele H*
Ann-Margret in *Tommy*
Fletcher
Glenda Jackson in *Hedda* (which I guess I need to see)
Carol Kane in *Hester Street*
