I have to admit that it's a name I didn't recognize but the face I certainly recognized. I've seen many of his movies but the best is *The Manchurian Candidate.* If you haven't seen this movie, or haven't seen it in a long time, run - - don't walk. An amazing movie. Like *The Umbrellas of Cherbourg,* it's what I call a one-movie genre. There's not another movie anything like it.
Silva has a small part but makes a big impact, especially in this fight scene with Frank Sinatra. Sinatra doesn't quite look right doing karate but maybe that's what makes it so believable...? That and all the broken furniture. And the off-kilter dialogue.
My brother Howard alerted me to the death of the saxophonist Pharaoh Sanders. I can't say I'd heard of him but this recording (chosen by Howard) certainly conjures up a whole mood and environment. Something about the theatricality and the grandeur make me think of Taylor Mac!
