The soprano Edith Mathis died the other day at the age of 86. She had a remarkable career, singing in Vienna, Glyndebourne, Berlin, Covent Garden, the Met, and many other houses. She recorded the Mahler 4 with both Karajan and Bernstein.
She invisibly broke through into pop culture as one of the two "Italian ladies" (she was Swiss and Gundula Janowitz was Austrian) singing a sublime duet from The Marriage of Figaro in The Shawshank Redemption.
