CHICK COREA
My brother Howard (also my mom and Stephanie) alerted me to the death of composer and pianist Chick Corea. He was 79. I asked Howard to share some music, some highlights from "Chick's carrea," as he amusingly put it. I'll give him the floor:
Took me a bit to find it, but this set from the 60s with Miles is a stunner.
But, post - Miles:
Return To Forever (jazz supergroup)1976
I saw him in the 80's a couple times with his Elektric Band:
(SOOOO 80s)
his duets with vibraphonist Gary Burton were long running, but a little indulgent, his funky fusion is chick at his best imho, those RTF clips are historic.
JEAN CLAUDE CARRIERE
Jean-Claude Carrière died on the 8th at the age of 89. He was a French author and screenwriter, best known for his nineteen-year collaboration with Luis Buñuel, one of my favorite filmmakers. Carrière also wrote the screenplay to *The Unbearable Lightness of Being* and *Birth,* that spooky movie with Nicole Kidman and the little boy in the bathtub. Carrière and Buñuel's best film is *Belle de Jour,* but my favorite is *The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie.* Such a magical, baffling movie.
KATHERINE CREAG
This one hit me hard. Richard and I watch The Today Show every weekday, and Today in New York, the local WNBC show that precedes it. One of their reporters on the street is Katherine Creag, who would be on the scene reporting on a fire, a water main break, a human interest story, whatever. She died on Wednesday. The cause of death has been vaguely referred to as "a medical condition." She was only 47.
Two Giants in their fields. Will be missed!!!
