Yikes, another icon of 1960s France - - my brother Howard just told me that Anouk Aimée died, at the age of 92. I first encountered her in A Man and a Woman, a sweet little romantic drama that was on the Milwaukee PBS station sometime when I was in high school. I recorded it (on videotape, can you imagine) and watched it over and over. I also got the soundtrack (on LP, can you imagine) and listened to that over and over.
Here she is in another of her iconic roles, as Mastroianni's wife in 8 1/2:
And here's the theme to A Man and a Woman, one of the greatest movie themes of all time. It doesn't just conjure up memories of the movie (if you've seen the movie), it evokes a whole freaking era.
