Mike Miller alerted me to the death of Agnès Varda, an extraordinary French film director. I see her as the Frida Kahlo of the French film business, because she was initially best known as the wife of a more famous artist, but has since gained traction as an artist in her own right. Her husband was Jacques Demy, best known for *The Umbrellas of Cherbourg.* Varda had a long and varied career, she made fascinating narrative films and equally fascinating documentaries. Her most recent film was *Faces Places,* a darling and inspiring documentary. My favorite of her films is *Cléo from 5 to 7,* from 1962. Here's the trailer:
