My favorite story about Astaire: he was a star on Broadway when he went out to Hollywood for a screen test. They didn't go for him the first time. The reaction card, by some dim-witted producer, said, "Can't act. Can't sing. Balding. Can dance a little."
And I'm not sure this recording was discussed in *Stardust Melodies* (I could just check my copy of the book, but it's so far away), but I love this cheesy recording by Enoch Light Orchestra.
