I know what you're thinking - - who the hell are Francis Lai and Douglas Rain? I thought this was a CELEBRITY Death Watch, shouldn't these be people I know or at least have heard of? Well, you might not know their names but you probably know their work.
Francis Lai was a composer who wrote music for over 100 films, most of them French. His best-known composition is the theme from *Love Story.* I'm not a big fan of that droopy tune, but I am TOTES CRAY CRAY for the theme from *A Man and a Woman,* a quirky little romantic drama from 1966. I had the soundtrack on LP and listened to it over and freaking over in my late teens. For me, it was the height of chic, a sparkly yet laid-back statement of mid-century French sophistication.
And Douglas Rain was a Canadian actor best known as the voice of HAL 9000, the devious computer in *2001: A Space Odyssey.* The line, "I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that" is one of the greatest lines and line READINGS in movie history.
And this just in - - Stan Lee! An American original!
